Boakai Promises Major Reform at Ministry of Defence

Monrovia, Liberia – As part of a significant initiative to enhance the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has announced the recruitment of additional 600 soldiers to be recruited into the Arm Forces over the course of the next four years.

In his remarks during the 69th Armed Forces Day celebration held at the Barclay Training Center in Monrovia, President Boakai highlighted a number of investments and reforms meant to create a more powerful and advanced force. Starting in 2026 and continuing through 2029, a significant component of the plan is hiring 600 additional employees annually.

President Boakai disclosed that the action is meant to address the mounting concerns of attrition and an aging force stressing the significance of enhancing soldiers’ welfare in addition to recruitment.

The Liberian Leader informed the public of the government plans to rebuild and renovate military barracks in Bomi and Maryland Counties following recent improvements in Margibi and Nimba Counties,. He pointed out that sustaining discipline, morale, and general preparedness among the army depends heavily on having excellent and suitable accommodation.

“My Government pledges to ensure that the facility is completed and fully operational, serving not only the AFL but also the wider Liberian population. By addressing mental health, we affirm that resilience is not only physical but also psychological. A strong military is one that is prepared in mind as much as in body.

“The Ministry of National Defense will work with the Ministries of State, Public Works, and other government line institutions to conduct an assessment on these facilities to begin renovation and/or construction work. These projects are more than infrastructure; they are investments in dignity, guaranteeing that our soldiers and their families live in safe, decent, and supportive environments. A soldier who is dignified at home will defend our nation abroad,” he asserted.

Highlighting his administration commitment to gender inclusion, President Boakai reaffirmed efforts to increase female participation within the AFL.

He acknowledged funding assistance from the ELSIE Foundation and proudly pointed out that Liberia now has its first female Minister of National Defense adding that the future of the Armed Forces must be inclusive. “We are proud to acknowledge and appreciate the support of the ELSIE Foundation, which has committed funds solely for the purpose of increasing female parity within the AFL. Women bring unique perspectives, skills, and strengths to the military,” presidend Boakai said.

President Boakai further stressed the importance of regional cooperation in maintaining peace and security. He expressed appreciation to Nigeria and the United States for their continued partnership and support to Liberia’s military development. The President called on all Liberians to support the Armed Forces, describing them as protectors of the nation’s sovereignty, democracy, and future.
