WHO Enhances Emergency Care in Liberia

Monrovia, Liberia – To improve emergency response and provide access to life-saving care for women and newborn in Liberia, the World Health Organization (WHO) has given the Ministry of Health two fully equipped ambulances and vital medical supplies and equipment worth US$600,000.

Infant ventilators, newborn incubators, resuscitation tools, and portable ultrasound devices are examples of medical equipment. The assistance is strategically relevant as the Liberian government moves forward with its newly announced “365-day action plan to minimize maternal and infant mortality nationwide aimed at strengthening access to timely and quality care across the country.

The initiative is part of WHO ongoing effort to improve Liberia’s national health system.

Speaking at the event,the WHO Representative to Liberia, Dr. Olushayo Olu, the WHO Representative emphasized that the assistance fulfills a campaign pledge made by Dr. Mohamed Yakub Janabi, the WHO Regional Director for Africa. Dr. Olu stated, “We are pleased to hand over fully fitted ambulances, essential medical supplies and equipment, valued at an estimated USD 600,000.” adding that the ambulances are well equipped to serve multiple purposes including mobile intensive care units, mobile clinics and general
purposes.

Minister of health, Dr. Louise M. Kpoto in return express gratitude to the World Health Organization for providing these ambulances with medical equipment and supplies. She added that the ambulances will enhance care for critically ill patients and boost emergency response services, including through the central Emergency Medical Services at John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Monrovia.
