GBAEPO KAWEAKEN, River Gee County — At least two people were killed and five others left in critical condition on Saturday night after a commercial bus caught fire in Gbaepo Kaweaken, River Gee County.
According to eyewitnesses, seven people were reported to have been on board when the incident occurred.
Those injured included the driver, the conductor, the car boy, and two passengers. All five were rushed to a nearby health facility for treatment.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established. Locals in the area are calling on national authorities to launch an impartial investigation to establish what led to the fire clash.
The tragedy highlights Liberia’s ongoing road safety crisis. Road accidents continue to claim hundreds of lives each year across the country.
Data recently released by the Liberia National Police for the first quarter of 2026 shows an increase in fatalities.
The Liberia National Police has also flagged the high rate of case withdrawals and pending files in several counties, saying the trend undermines accountability and enforcement.
