Monrovia, Liberia – Amidst calls from the public about delays in announcing WAEC results, the West African Examinations Council, through it Head Dale Gbotoe has released the 2026 examination statistics, recording a 79 percent pass rate in one of its major categories with 33,000 out of 40,938 candidates meeting the required standards.
Speaking at the Ministry of Information Press Briefing on Thursday, August 20,2026, the Head of WAEC Liberia, Dr. Dale G. Gbotoe, announced that a total of 40,938 candidates sat the 2026 examinations in the key category, with 33,000 candidates pass successfully.
He described the 79% pass rate as an indication of steady progress, but noted that performance varied across subjects and categories.
Dr. Gbotoe provided a breakdown of results in core subjects noting that in English Language and Mathematics, a total of 20,741 candidates successfully passed both subjects.
Gbotoe stated that in Mathematics, 3,900 candidates obtained a pass Combined Requirements: 2,268 candidates obtained the required grades in Mathematics and other core subjects with 1,694 candidates obtaining credits in at least the required number of subjects.
According to WAEC Boss, another category recorded 3,045 candidates who met the benchmarks adding that the data reflects both improvement and areas needing attention, particularly in science and technical subjects.
”These results should serve as motivation for schools to invest more in teaching and learning, and for students to take their studies seriously,” he said.
He commended schools, teachers, candidates, parents, and other stakeholders for their cooperation during the 2026 examination process, noting that smooth administration was key to the release of timely results.
Dr. Gbotoe however urged schools, teachers, and students to sustain efforts toward improving learning outcomes across all subject areas.
