MONROVIA – August 4, 2026 — As Liberia strives toward universal health insurance, the People’s Republic of China has reiterated its commitment to supporting Liberia’s health sector.
Speaking on behalf of the Chinese Embassy at the opening of the 2026 National Health Review Conference, a representative of the Embassy commended the Ministry of Health and partners for the initiative noting that China shares Liberia’s goal to provide access to quality healthcare.
The Chinese diplomat highlighted China’s role in developing Liberia’s health infrastructure, describing it as “a lasting symbol of friendship.”
Addressing the conference theme, the Chinese representative said Liberia’s push for Universal Health Insurance aligns with China’s commitment to a “global community of health for all.”
He noted that, achieving universal coverage will require sound policies, sustainable financing, capable health workers, and resilient institutions. Adding that China remain committed to working with Liberia to deepen the strategic partnership.
The chinese Representative also pointed to ongoing support through medical supplies and targeted health programs like the cardiology department at JFK Hospital which was inaugurated under the China-Liberia Paired Hospital Cooperation Mechanism, lamenting that it is Liberia’s first dedicated cardiology unit and is expected to expand access to treatment for cardiovascular diseases.
He emphasized that sustainable healthcare also depends on skilled personnel adding that since 1984, 18 batches of Chinese medical teams have served in Liberia alongside local health workers.
He further that since 2024, 112 Liberian health professionals have participated in training programs in China covering clinical practice, hospital management, and public health.
The conference centers around a call for continued investment in maternal and newborn care as a foundation for a healthier nation and stronger health system.
