Fear of Xenophobic Attack, Triggers Repatriation

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Due to fear in the face of frequent xenophobic attacks against foreigners in South Africa, the Liberia Refugees Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC) has repatriated the first group of 17 out of 29 Liberians who voluntarily asked to return to Liberia right away.

Upon their return at the Roberts International Airport on Wednesday, they were received and welcomed by the Executive Director of LRRRC, Cllr. Jeror Cole Bangalu where he encouraged them to remain hopeful, assuring them that the Government of Liberia is doing everything possible to help them rebuild their lives and restore their hope.

Cllr. Bangalu revealed that another group of returnees is anticipated to arrive in the coming days.

Also speaking in an interview with reporters, Alexander Saytonneh, one of the returnees, described the encounter as terrifying and told reporters that the xenophobic attacks caused him to lose his enterprises.

He said they were relieved to be back home after being upset in Durban, South Africa, which he identified as one of the cities greatly affected by the recent assaults.

Saytonneh thanked the government for stepping in to ensure their safe return.

As the government works to support individuals impacted by the ongoing xenophobic attacks in South Africa, more Liberians are anticipated to be sent home, according to the LRRRC.
